Anti-aging

As we age, our skin will gradually age, which is caused by the loss of collagen and our skin's metabolism slowing down. If anti-aging measures are not taken in time, symptoms such as skin dullness, skin dryness, and wrinkles may occur. The metabolism of the human body produces redox reactions, which in turn generate free radicals. Too many free radicals will lead to cell apoptosis and tissue damage, resulting in aging of the body if they cannot be removed in time. Antioxidants can keep free radicals within a normal range, thereby delaying aging and enhancing immunity. Therefore, they are powerful tools against aging and support the health of the cardiovascular, neuromuscular, and immune systems to prevent or lessen the effects of aging.

There are many skin anti-aging strategies, such as laser treatments, hyaluronic acid injections, facelift surgery and more. A certain degree of anti-aging can also be achieved through the consumption of some antioxidant substances, such as some green leafy vegetables, fruits and dietary supplements. There are some powerful anti-aging supplements on the market, whose main ingredients include curcumin, vitamin E, collagen, and epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). These ingredients and their functions are shown below.

Collagen

Collagen

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, accounting for more than 30% of total protein. It is found in connective tissue, skin, tendons, bones, and cartilage, where it aids in skin nutrition, muscle and joint strengthening, and tissue repair. The specific functions of collagen in anti-aging include maintaining skin elasticity, retaining skin moisture, and supporting thicker hair and healthier nails. Due to the loss of collagen that leads to the aging of the skin, collagen supplementation is necessary to maintain a youthful appearance and smooth skin. Although some collagen will be lost during digestion, it avoids the side effects of subcutaneous injections and other surgery. And because of its ability to reverse the signs of aging, oral collagen supplements are popular among consumers.

EGCG

EGCG

Epigallocatechin gallin (EGCG), also known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate, is a polyphenolic compound found in green tea. Green tea contains powerful antioxidants, and EGCG is the main active ingredient. Structurally, EGCG is an ester of epigallocatechin and gallic acid. Due to its structural properties, EGCG plays an imperative role in the fight against cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Furthermore, EGCG has very strong antioxidant activity and is one of the most effective anti-aging supplements on the market. EGCG is the most potent antioxidant polyphenol among green tea and has specific anti-aging effects, including preventing free radical DNA damage, reducing oil peroxidation, and scavenging free radicals, as well as preventing skin aging and wrinkles.

Fisetin

Fisetin

Fistein (7,3',4'-flavon-3-ol) belongs to the flavonoid group of polyphenols and can be found in many fruits and vegetables, giving them their vibrant colors. As a result of its polyphenolic structure, it has a wide range of health benefits, including neurotrophic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. Similarly to other flavonoids, fistein removes free radicals and prevents oxidative stress. The anti-aging properties of fistein make it a senolytic or senotherapeutic which is a substance that destroys aging cells. Due to its non-adverse effects, fistein has received much attention in the field of longevity supplements [1].

Aside from the ingredients mentioned above, other ingredients such as vitamin A, vitamin E, curcumin, and crocin also have anti-aging properties.
