Food Ingredients

Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris) is a spherical unicellular eukaryotic green microalga, which presents a thick cell wall (100–200 nm) as the main characteristic, belonging to the genus Chlorella. It is one of the longest-living species on Earth and occurs naturally in nature, especially in freshwater. It can also be cultivated artificially. As a highly efficient photosynthetic algae, C. vulgaris can use light energy. It uses organic carbon sources for reproduction and growth at a rapid speed under heterotrophic conditions. As a result of its diversity, C. vulgaris contains a wide range of species, including Chlorella pyrenoidosa, Chlorella ellipsoidea, Chlorella emersonii, and Chlorella kesslerii. What's more, C. vulgaris is mainly used as a dietary supplement or protein-rich food additive because of its high protein, fat and carbohydrate content, as well as its multivitamins.

Nutrients and Functions

NutrientsFunctions
Chlorella Growth FactorChlorella Growth Factor (C.G.F.) is a cell-active substance that only exists in chlorella and can be obtained by extraction. The content of C.G.F. varies between different chlorella species, and the highest content is Chlorella pyrenoidosa. C.G.F. contains 19 kinds of amino acids, of which 7 are essential amino acids for the human body. It also contains nucleotides, polysaccharides, amino acids, vitamins and other functional ingredients. The total amount of nucleotides reaches 6.8%, and the content of polysaccharides is 4.8%.
C.G.F is one of the most valuable nutritional ingredients in chlorella, which has various effects on the human body, including promoting the growth of probiotics, activating cells, improving hematopoietic function, and promoting protein synthesis.
Vitamins and MineralsVitamins and minerals are abundant in  C. vulgaris, surpassing those found in vegetables by a wide margin. As an excellent source of vitamins, chlorella contains a wide range of B vitamins that play key roles in nervous system support, digestive health promotion, and oxidation resistance. The high content of trace elements iron, zinc, and manganese in chlorella also helps to fix mineral deficiencies.
Protein and Amino acidsThe protein content in chlorella is very high and the types of amino acids are relatively complete. Among these, glutamic acid, aspartic acid and leucine are relatively high. These amino acids enable C. vulgaris to be used as an excellent plant protein source for nutritional fortification of food, avoiding adverse symptoms caused by amino acid deficiency.
Fatty acidsThe unsaturated fatty acids in C. vulgaris account for 72% of the total fatty acids, and the chain lengths are mainly C16-C18. Linoleic acid and linolenic acid are essential fatty acids and are more abundant in C. vulgaris. They can prevent skin moisture loss, reduce the risk of high blood pressure, and prevent myocardial infarction, arteriosclerosis, gallstones and other diseases.
Polysaccharides and GlycoproteinsThe content of polysaccharides and glycoproteins in C. vulgaris is relatively high, and the glycoproteins mainly contain glucose, galactose, rhamnose, and a small amount of arabinose, xylose and mannose. These polysaccharides can enhance immunity and also have inhibitory effects on some cancer cells in vitro.

Benefits of Chlorella vulgaris

Because of its rich content of proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals, C. vulgaris has a high nutritional value. In addition, its unique active factor C.G.F. also gives it certain medical and health care effects. The main health benefits of C. vulgaris are listed below.

C. vulgaris has the function of inhibiting fat absorption, and it can significantly reduce blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels.

Lower blood fat

Lower blood fat

C. vulgaris can improve the immunity of the body by improving macrophage phagocytosis, promoting the transformation of lymphocytes, and increasing the number of lymphocytes.

Enhance immunity

Enhance immunity

Chlorella glycoprotein has anti-oxidant properties, which allow it to remove free radicals from the body in order to enhance the immune system and keep the body healthy.

Anti-oxidation
