Lactobacillus acidophilus belongs to the Lactobacillus bacteria genus. This bacteria is found in the gut and produces lactic acid, primarily by producing lactase and then decomposing lactose into lactic acid. When Lactobacillus acidophilus breaks down food in the gut, the lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and other substances formed can inhibit the growth of "bad" bacteria, maintaining gut health. Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most commonly used probiotics, and the different strains have different health benefits for the body.
