Lactobacillus paracasei (L. paracasei) is the most common probiotic found in the human gut and mouth. It fights off harmful organisms that might cause diseases, and benefits the immune system and gut health. It is a gram-positive lactic acid bacterium that produces lactic acid and is therefore commonly used in the fermentation process of dairy products. L. paracasei was once assigned to the genus Lactobacillus. As compared to other Lactobacillus species, L. paracasei demonstrates distinct variances in its capacity to endure higher temperatures.

L. paracasei can increase natural killer cell activity, lymphocyte proliferation, cytokine synthesis, and antibody formation, all of which contribute to improved immune system function.
L. paracasei has anti-inflammatory properties that fight off infection and also regulates inflammation processes in the body by increasing the release of cytokines.
As one of the most commonly used probiotics, L. paracasei plays a significant role in gut health. It has the ability to modulate gut flora, increasing the number of beneficial bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in the intestines, while reducing harmful bacteria. Furthermore, L. paracasei strengthens the gut barrier and facilitates the absorption of certain nutrients from food.
