Rapeseed lecithin, a lecithin extracted from the seeds of the oilseed rape plant (Brassica napus), is used as a natural emulsifier. It has similar properties and uses to other types of lecithin, such as soy lecithin and sunflower lecithin, and can be used in place of sunflower or soy lecithin as a food additive and in many other products.
Alfa Chemistry offers non-GMO rapeseed lecithin in liquid and powder form.
Rapeseed lecithin has a very different fatty acid composition. It has higher oleic acid (C18:1) values and lower linoleic acid (C18:1) values than soybean and sunflower lecithin.
Our rapeseed lecithin products are high in C18:3 alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which provides high levels of essential Omega-3 fats (up to 3.6%). ALA is said to be beneficial for cardiovascular health.
Rapeseed lecithin is used in a variety of products, including the food, feed, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. It is a key ingredient in many standardized food applications and has even shown some benefits in complex fat products such as margarine and salad dressings.
As a dietary supplement, rapeseed lecithin offers potential health benefits due to its phospholipid and choline content. Some of the potential applications of rapeseed lecithin as a dietary supplement include:
The phospholipids, particularly phosphatidylcholine, found in rapeseed lecithin are important for brain function and cognitive health. Increasing dietary intake of phosphatidylcholine may support memory, focus, and overall brain health.
Choline, a nutrient present in rapeseed lecithin, is essential for liver function and fat metabolism. Adequate choline intake may help support liver health and prevent conditions like fatty liver disease.
Some research suggests that phosphatidylcholine from rapeseed lecithin can contribute to heart health by helping to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. However, further studies are needed to establish more definitive conclusions.
Similar to other lecithins, rapeseed lecithin can assist in the digestion and absorption of dietary fats. It acts as an emulsifier, aiding in the breakdown of fats into smaller particles for improved absorption.
