Food Ingredients

Spirulina is a naturally blue-green algae belonging to the genus Arthrospira that occurs in Africa, Asia, and South America, usually cultivated from lakes or farmed in ponds. Spirulina is considered a superfood because it contains a variety of nutrients, including fat-soluble vitamins (A, E, and K), fatty acids (DHA, EPA), beta-carotene, minerals, and phycobiliproteins (C-phycocyanin and allophycocyanin). All of these nutrients can significantly benefit the health of the human body, making spirulina a great all-in-one source of nutrition. For example, phycocyanin has powerful anti-oxidation properties, a wide anti-oxidation range, and a comprehensive amino acid composition, so it can be used to enhance human immunity, reduce inflammation, and improve anemia. As a result, spirulina is becoming increasingly popular as dietary supplements and whole foods in the various forms of tablet, flake and powder.

Nutrients and Functions

Spirulina is considered one of the most nutrient-dense foods, rich in vitamins, minerals, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and protein. Its nutritional value is several times higher than that of general foods, such as soybeans, beef, eggs. The nutritional components and functions of spirulina are shown in the table below.

NutrientsFunctions
β-CaroteneSpirulina is rich in β-carotene, its content is 15 times that of carrots and 40-60 times that of spinach.
VitaminsSpirulina is rich in vitamins B1, B2, B5, B6, B11, B12, C, E. Each of the B vitamins performs a special physiological function and a deficiency of any of them may lead to disease.
MineralsSpirulina contains a variety of essential trace minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, phosphorus, iodine, selenium, iron, copper, and zinc. Iron deficiency may lead to anemia, zinc deficiency may cause developmental delay, and selenium can activate DNA repair enzymes, stimulate the production of immunoglobulin and antibodies, capture free radicals, reduce or resist the toxicity of certain metals in the body, and inhibit carcinogenesis.
Chlorophyll AIn Spirulina, chlorophyll A has a unique hematopoietic function.
GLAThere is a high amount of GLA in spirulina, which is effective in promoting calcium absorption, improving immunity, preventing metabolic disorders, and preventing aging.
PolysaccharidesThe polysaccharides in spirulina act as anti-radiation agents and indirectly inhibit cancer cell proliferation by enhancing immunity. Additionally, they slow the aging process by increasing SOD activity and reducing the production of lipid peroxides.

Benefits of Spirulina

Spirulina has many health benefits, including anti-cancer effects, heart health support, allergy relief, immune system enhancement, lowering blood lipids, and maintaining eye and oral health. Here we provide a brief overview of four health benefits.

Spirulina is rich in antioxidant active substances, including vitamin C, vitamin E, β-carotene, phycocyanin, superoxide dismutases (SODs), and selenium. These ingredients have a strong ability to scavenge free radicals, reduce inflammation in the body, and play an important role in the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation.

Anti-cancer effect

Excessive fat content in the blood may lead to serious diseases such as myocardial infarction and stroke. Due to the properties of phycocyanin, spirulina has the effect of reducing total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and increasing high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, thus reducing some diseases.

Lower blood lipids

Lower blood lipids

The antioxidants contained in spirulina have some anti-inflammatory properties, so it may help relieve allergies caused by pollen, animal hair, and dust, especially allergic rhinitis. Studies have found that taking spirulina can significantly relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, including a runny nose, stuffy nose, and sneezing.

A healthy immune system is supported by spirulina's comprehensive nutrition. As well as providing the body with nutrients, spirulina promotes the production of white blood cells and antibodies, which are both vital to boosting immunity.
